Zoltan Bekefy Interview

Tell us a bit about yourself.
My name is Zoltan Bekefy. I was born in Komarno (Slovakia), currently I live on the beautiful Island of Ireland. I am 31 years old and am a big fan of good food and music. I am a landscape photographer, a fanatic traveller and a "glass half full" type of person.

How did you get into photography?
I’m completely self-taught. I started digital photography in 2005, which eventually changed my perception about the world. I have been tirelessly exploring the scenes of nature near and far, trying to capture those magical moments and transform them into eternal pieces of art. Now I am devoting my passion to landscape and fine art photography. My photography focuses on grand landscapes of oceans, skies and mountains, as well as fine art natural scenes. My ultimate goal is to capture the true beauty of nature around us.

What drew you to landscape photography?
The simple answer is ‘Mother Nature’ . I find nature to be more compelling, mysterious and overwhelming than any facial expression. One of my favourite locations is the ocean. I enjoy the loneliness when photographing at the coastline. I feel deeply concentrated but at the same time deeply relaxed.

Why do you like black and white as a medium?
I cannot tell you exactly. I love the simplicity and mood that black and white photography gives us. Monochrome images of a scene seem to encapsulate more personal meaning to me.


Talk us through how you'd set up and take a shot.
Everything starts with travel planning - country, route, best time to travel, everything has to be prepared carefully. Even before you set off, there is a lot to take into consideration, but once you get there things tend to turn out completely differently anyway. The way I usually work is to park my truck at a likely location, strap on my backpack, gather my tripod and go for a walk. When I find something that catches my attention then I begin the process of seeing how it will fit into a composition. They say that good things come to those who wait, and that’s very true for landscape photography.

How did you get involved with United Creativity
I got a personal message and invitation from Edward Loades, one the founders of United Creativity. I felt honoured to be selected among other young, unique and talented artists from Central and Eastern Europe. Thank you!

Zoltan Bekefy has recently exhibited at New Wave Photography 2013 at The Crypt Gallery in London. The exhibition will travel to Krakow where he will continue to show his work alongside 11 other artists from Central and Eastern from 13th June - 28th July. The exhibition will then move to Budapest in September.
