On-Camera Flash Techniques for Digital Wedding and Portrait Photography is a detailed and easy to follow book that covers two very popular areas of photography.

Neil van Niekerk has tried to make the book as easy to follow as possible, without using the technical jargon that can confuse newcomers to the subject. We are taken through some essential concepts of on camera flash, and a little guidance on equipment, before looking at exposure metering in your photos.

Examples of what the same photo looks like taken at different exposures are given, to help you better understand the effect that different exposures have on the outcome of your photos.
Various flash modes, and how to correctly use modifiers to get different effects is explained well, with clear explanation of how flash effects such as bounce flash really open up the image.

Also looked at is flash techniques outdoors. There is a vast difference between the quality and colour of light outdoors and indoors, and so it is important to understand that flash will have a different effect here. Niekerk explains how the light outside needs to be fairly even on the subjects, before using flash to add texture and depth.

Several photos are used to display every technique, and the settings used along with any useful notes are really helpful to those looking to improve their wedding portrait lighting skills.

This book is ideal as a top up guide for the professional wedding photographer, and it will also serve as a good manual for the inexperienced photographer looking to better their photos through lighting.
