Happy Trails

By IamDora
This is Hurricane Rescue, aka Stormy.

His mother (in the background) was rescued from a PMSG farm. PMSG - Pregnant Mare Serum - is used in making steroids from the blood of pregnant horses. On this farm mares were kept pregnant, colt killed at birth, and the mare spent her life in a standing stall and poorly fed because under-conditioned horses produce more of what is needed.

The farm was raided and the mare now known as Rainy Day Gal (aka Rainy) was one of the horses rescued. She was only three years old but, unknown to the rescuers, already pregnant.

No sooner was Rainy in a loving home then we were hit by Hurricane Dorian and the shelter for Rainy was inadequate. A neighbour offered his barn and in the heavy rain and wind of the approaching hurricane, Rainy was walked down the road to the neighbour's barn. It was a couple of months after that that a vet realized that the mare was pregnant.

Stormy was born last April. He is barely a year old and he is already 16.1 hands and he seems to be dabbling. Right now he's a chestnut with blond hairs in his mane and tail. He also has striped hooves a further indication that he may roan or silver out and become a strawberry roan or a grey. He has 2 years left to grow seriously and a couple years after that to add to it. So he is most likely going to top 17 hands.

Rainy, in the meantime has been started under saddle - a gentle soul that promises to be a super riding horse.

Stormy is a messy eater and like all kids likes to roll and play in the dirt. The version is just to show his colouring and the fact he is growing again - his rump being taller than his front. But he's a dirty boy in this photo.

The award? For your infinite animal wisdom and caring alongside two lovely images of two beautiful horses. I think you should add photojournalism to your tags Dora.

Thank you cooky and Sylvia for the awards and kind comments. PM's pending. Those two horses could not possibly have better care The mare will likely become a school horse and Stormy has dressage or show jumper written all over him.

More my daughter's knowledge than mine. She dragged me around the show circuit when she was competing.
I love to hear these stories, the rescue part. My mare had a colt who before he turned a year had changed color combinations three times. At one stage he was chocolate with a blonde mane and I had my fingers crossed that he would stay that color but alas he went chestnut with a dark brown mane... a sweet boy regardless.

Your horse reminded me of a favourite Ian Tyson' song called Elko
Blues.
When I ride the Roan mare I'm free.... when I ride the Roan mare boys
I' m free.
When I lie awake and sleep won't come cause my babies are gone
You know the night closes in on me

Finally next week a bit of rain and cooler temperatures here , a break from frying in the pan !

Beautiful horses Dora
Cheers
Walt

Yes, a month ago she was predicting a liver chestnut. Now they're seeing white hairs and striped hooves and black skin. But it's his size that has everyone guessing. and me snickering. They used to make fun of me when I had to use the seat on the picnic table to get aboard my Joey.
