Up Close & Personal With A Batwing Swallowtail (Agophaneura semperi) (best viewed large)

By gconant
Also known as a Red Bodied Swallowtail.
Indigenous to parts of Central America.
These guys are prime examples of Batesian and Mullerian Mimicry.
Their caterpillars eat plants that make the butterflies toxic to predators.
Predators have learned to avoid all butterflies with bright red bodies, which also allows other non-toxic butterflies with red bodies to avail themselves of the same predator avoidance that Batwings enjoy.
