The path to enlightenment

By budapestbill
St Mary's Lighthouse, Curry's Point, Tynemouth, North Tyneside.

St Mary's Island is one of the well-known local landmarks along the North Tyneside coast. The island houses a lighthouse which was built in 1898 and remained operational until 1984. The island is now run as a visitor centre, with the surrounding area maintained as a nature reserve (both on and off land).

Reached between the tides via a short causeway from the car park, St. Mary's has all the fascination of a miniature, part-time island. Visitors can climb the 137 steps inside the tower to the lantern room to enjoy spectacular views along the North East coast of England.

Taken on 3rd April 2010.

Once again Debu, Jennnn, Fred and everyone else who has taken time out to look at my offerings, thanks for your comments on my recent uploads. This place never ceases to amaze me - it gives you so many variables because of the weather and the tides. Much of the north-east coast and Northumberland in particular give you great opportunities.
