John’s Philosophy
When you come on this photo tour, you’re my guest, and I want you to have the best possible experience – of the country, of the temples, and of capturing the spirit of one of the most enigmatic historical sites on the planet. We will visit some of my favorite temples and villages, at times of day when we can find the solitude necessary to create meaningful photographs. Angkor has changed since the days when you could sit by yourself at Angkor Wat for hours and watch the sunset. So that means being flexible, and if one spot isn’t working for us photographically, I’ll change the itinerary on the spot and find a place that does. We’ll travel through Angkor by tuk-tuk, in my opinion the best way to see the temples in open-air comfort. At other times we’ll travel by car, minivan or boat, whatever the situation calls for.
Your accommodation will be in luxury and comfort at the Borei Angkor resort. There will be individual rooms for all workshop participants. Most workshops double up their participants in rooms and charge a single supplement extra for a separate room, but we feel everyone deserves a little solitude after a long day’s work.
The workshops are small: a maximum of ten people. It makes for better camaraderie, more flexibility to move quickly from place to place, and it gives me time to work with each person individually. When you’re traveling, it’s hard to resist the temptation to cram everything in without a break. We do have a pretty intensive schedule, but I’ve made sure that you’ll have time to edit your photos and share them during our photo review evenings. I’ve also made sure to create breaks so you’ll have time to relax and explore on your own, shop for art or mementos, or re-visit one of your favourite places to shoot.
Who This Expedition is For?
I have worked with people of all different levels of experience, from those who have just picked up their first real camera to artists who are interested in learning more about photography to other professionals who are interested in refining their techniques. You may be interested in creating fine art images, or more journalistic reportage, or simply experimenting to find your own style. Whether you shoot digital or film, or use a more specialized technique, I’m happy to help you get to the next level in your growth as a photographer.
