Leica M9 Digital Rangefinder Review

Leica once again come up smelling of roses with the M9. A full-frame rangefinder that even they thought couldn't be built.

Difficult to review this camera. Why did I buy it? because I wanted it. Does it warrant the price because it is better than any other camera. Well only in certain specific areas. The combination of the full frame (with no anti alias filter) and Leica lenses give matchlessly sharp images, IF you can get used to manual rangefinding. Only really semi automatic exposure at best but better used as manual. Pretty rubbish high iso performance really, difficult to use long focus or macro by comparison with modern DSLRs. BUT it is small, quiet, image quality is superb and from my point of view it actually puts me back in control of the picture taking process. I take different kinds of pictures with this camera and the process is different.. Slower, more thoughtful and more considered.

I use it a lot but not to the exclusion of all my canon gear which is used just as much but for different types of photography. For wildlife, action , close-up / macro I wouldn't choose anything but my Canon gear, But for street photography, people, landscape, and just carrying round as the camera I use day to day. Unsurpassed beacuse it forces me to think about what I am doing.

Oh yes, you're dead right. A lot of money. But I love it.
