We review the brand-new Nikon Z50, Nikon's new 20mp APS-C mirrorless camera, which uses the Z-mount from the Z6 and Z7. Find out how this speedy shooter performs.
I preordered this camera as soon as it was announced and have been pleased with it in most respects. It's a neat little camera and I like the 16-50 lens which makes it a very compact unit with the lens collapsed. My other camera is a Nikon D500 so it has tough competition to contend with.
I like the electronic viewfinder but although there's plenty of information available, it's unlikely to win over photographers used to Olympus or Fujifilm cameras. You can get a histogram and a virtual horizon but not at the same time, which seems a shame.
The major deficit for me is the lack of an ultra wide angle lens. That's OK, I'll use my DX 10-20 with the FTZ converter. It fits fine and works well hand held but I habitually use a tripod. Because that large adaptor is so close to the small body you can't use it with a QR plate. That's certainly the case with arca-swiss type plates and I can't imagine any other type would work in those close confines. The QR plate could be fitted to the FTZ adapter but what a faff that would be!
All in all it's a great little walk around camera but with limitations.
