10mm width (cropped) vs 17mm width (full frame)

Does anyone know if a 10mm wide angle lens on a cropped sensor camera (e.g. Nikon D80) produce an image wider, narrower or the same as a 17mm wide angle lens on a full frame sensor camera (e.g. canon 5D) ?
Thanks!!

10mm on a 1.5 crop Nikon is equivalent to 15mm on a full-frame DSLR. 10mm on a 1.6 crop Canon is equivalent to 16mm on a full-frame DSLR.

So in both instances the 10mm lens used on a 'cropper' will give you a slightly wider angle.

Nope, was first camera so lesson learned Smile But positive side gives me an excuse to get an upgrade, hence either the canon 5D or nikon D200 but want to shoot wide as possible...

Canon 5D with a Canon 14mm lens will be nice and wide! Smile

Hope so for that price! Shame the 10 -22mm canon lens wont fit on the 5D....i assume the sigma 10 -20mm will though(?)...only other alternative is the canon 16-35mm but cant justify the cost of that lens either...

And some lovely vignetting to go with it.

As Andy says, the Sigma 10-20 will physically fit on the 5D - but it will vignette severely as it's designed for cropped-sensor cameras.

The only option for that wide on a 5D (excluding fisheyes) is the Sigma 12-24.

... or the Sigma 15-30mm (cheaper than the 12-24mm).

Why not consider stitching two or three vertical shots together if subject is static with no moving water? 3 shots on a 5D/17-40 gives a horizontal field of view of about 135deg and resolution of 4000+ by 8000+ pixels!

So would a full frame senser camera with a 15mm lens produce less vignetting than 1.5 cropped frame sensor with a 10mm lens?
Ideally i'd have the 10-22mm canon lens on a Nikon D200 but think there may be a mounting problem there (?)
Only alternative (even taking into account of using a full frame sensor camera) is the sigma 10-20mm lens, there appears to be no 15mm wide zoom made by cannon to use on a full frame sensor camera.....

The amount of vignetting depends on the lens and sensor design.

In short the Sigma 10-20 on a 200D is one option, the Sigma 12-24 on a 5D gives you an even wider angle. Canon have the excelent 17-40L or 16-35L lenses. Do you need a wider zoom?

Yep wider.....ideally the canon 10 - 22mm, can you get an adaptor to fit that on a nikon? any side affects?

Why adapt a Canon 10-22mm when the Sigma 10-20mm is just as good and comes with a Nikon mount already fitted?
