There was an a version of the 20D with live view and the IR filter removed for astronomy.
I do not think you can have live view with the 30D as it will require a mirro mechre-design. The 30D has to power the mirror to keep it open, so current drain in live view would be bad. Also I think you need a re-design of the sensor electronics to support real time reading and video.

I would think that the power drain from the mirror would be small compared to the power drain from having the sensor and screen running at the same time. Still high battery consumption is not a show stopper - you just need to buy more bateries
