600mm F4 with close up lens
Close up lens come in varying strengths and are screwed on to the front of fixed focus or zoom lens. This is not possible with the 600f4. However one can attach a 52mm filter to the drop in filter holder and insert it to the lens. Filters wor this manner with no ill effects. Has any one tried close up lens this way. The closest focusing with the 600f4 is about 3.5meters (13 feet). Attached picture was taken with an original 100-400 mk1 at 400mm attached to an Eos 7D mk1, Subject is a male golden orb spider, in the background well out of focus, is the female whose span is about ones' hand. After she has had her wicked way with him, she eats him for sustenance to make the eggs to come. The webs were about three meters into the bush and the picture had to be taken on a bean bag from the car.
The theory is a 0.25 or 0.50 diopter will reduce the minimum focus of a portrait or telephoto lens.
As you have discovered there is no way to attach a close-up filter to the front of this lens - and even if there was with a filter size of over 100mm it would likely cost more than an extension tube - or maybe 2 tubes.

I do not have extension tubes or close up lens. Due to the interesting relationship between the sexes, I tried to create a picture that would bring the female more into the picture. the 600mm was on the 5D. with hindsight, I ought to have swapped the 600 on to the 7D. It is only when reviewing the files that the thought of using a close up lens in the filter slot of the 600 came to mind.

Focus stacking is an idea for future but I am not sure if I could have done it here, even if I had thought of it. If memory serves me correctly, the distance between both bugs is about one meter, maybe a little less. Her web was well over two meters long and is about a meter across. You can come across similar webs strung across shrubs, gently wafting in any breeze like curtains. They can cover shrubs of over three meters tall.
