A 'chatty' 18-55

I've just acquired a brand new Fujinon 18-55 as part of a kit (still under warranty), and it's sometimes - but not always - a noisy little thing. I shall explain. I have noted that aperture chatter can be an issue with this lens, as of course it can often be with some lenses, and this has probably been discussed [i]ad nauseam[/i] here and elsewhere, but I've not come across the particular issue I'm having at the moment. It may not be an issue at all - I just want to know if it's something that tends to happen with this lens. I always shoot in aperture priority mode, usually at f5.6 and set auto focus to single shot. With my other Fuji lenses (a 10-24 and a 35) when I half press the shutter button to focus and then (whether I take the shot or don't) take my finger off the shutter button, the aperture will quickly return to its fully open position and the viewfinder will brighten accordingly. That's quite normal, I believe. However, in the 18-55's case I'm finding that after I take my finger off the the shutter button the aperture does not immediately return to its 'fully open' position (f2.8) but rather 'chatters' along the way, ie, it emits a series of 'clicks' as it is doing so (with the viewfinder flickering slightly at the same time until full brightness is achieved). Funnily enough, this only happens when I'm shooting in poor light - when I'm shooting outdoors in normal daylight the lens is fine and 'chatter' is not evident. If it were not for that fact I'd perhaps be concerned that the aperture blades are sticking slightly, but I'm sure that's not the case. As I've indicated, I'm not especially bothered by this - more curious as to why it's happening at all. I'm not tech-savvy enough to figure such things out for myself. Any thoughts?

I'm afraid I can't offer a technical explanation, but I'm sure there's nothing to be concerned about. But what puzzles me about your query is the fact that you say the EVF brightness changes when you half-press or release the shutter button, in aperture priority. It shouldn't, it should stay exactly the same all the time, apart from the flickering you mention as the aperture re-sets to maximum. The only time it should brighten or darken when using either of the priority modes is if you move the exposure compensation dial.

Your comments are most reassuring, and, having looked at the performance of the lens again with regard to the screen brightening, you're absolutely right: it's doesn't dim or brighten at all; it merely flickers. For whatever reason, it is this 'flickering' that was giving me the impression of a change in viewfinder/screen brightness, when in fact that is clearly not the case.
