How about planting some interesting trees along the road side or a hedge to act as a screen. Might cost a bit to get it established but would be better for the wildlife. It would also act as a sound barrier. Cost less than a tunnel.

Milton Abbas - Stourhead is in Wiltshire but there have been others. Edensor in Derbyshire springs to mind.

That would be Haddon Hall, just south of Bakewell in Derbyshire. The Duke of Rutland insisted that the Midland Railway hide the line from view. It was basically built in a cutting and then covered over, known as a "cut & cover" tunnel.
