I have found them but the 'sub folders' are not high lighted. Damian

That means that Lightroom knows about them but that they are not there. If you go to the main source for that sub folder - i.e. either another heading or a hard drive - right click on it (in Lightroom) and from the menu that appears, click on 'Synchronise Folder'. This will then copy those files' details into that heading/hard drive. Lightroom does NOT actually have possession of any files - they are not actually in Lightroom - it contains their addresses on your computer. What you see are virtual copies and the 'not high-lighted' just lets you know that Lightroom does not have the address for any photos in that folder.

The names of the folders are in bold letter and high lighted but the little 'arrow' on left beside is not .! Does that matter ?

No - just right click and follow what I have said above.
