Astronomy questions that kids will ask......

9 Dec 2011 3:49PM
I am taking my telescopes to my sons school where I will be setting them up during the day for them to have a look at and through, I plan on setting up some evenings for parents and pupils to have a look at the Moon and planets etc through the scopes if there is enough interest.

I will be taking various printed photo's of planets to show them, I will take some books should I need to explain something and look something up. I may even take a laptop and projector for video and sky maps. So if you have any links such as showing different planet and star sizes such as this

I know they will have plenty of questions and want to try and prepare for at least some of them.

So my question to you is what questions do your kids ask or what would you expect to get asked by a group of 10 - 12 year olds.

Thanks in advance

How far away is that? How do you know?

What's a light year?

What is a star, constellation, galaxy made from, what's the difference?

Whats the difference between a star and a planet?

Has every planet a moon?

Why are they different colours?

How many stars are there?

How many galaxies are there?

How do you know the universe is getting bigger?

How old is it?

How did the universe start?

Whats the moon made from, why has it got its own light?

What do you mean by gravity?

What's an eclipse?

Someone might ask where God figures. Been through it and you need to be prepared! Goodluck Grin

Thank you everyone I'm feeling up to speed but I just know there will be an unexpected low baller.

I'm expecting a God question as it's a C of E school and I am a non believer, I will have to bite my lip and conform to that question or hand it over to the teachers Smile

Really looking forward to it but nervous at the same time as I want it to go well and get some interest

Off the top ogf my head..

how to know the difference between a star and a planet..
the concept of the ecliptic.. the narrow band that the sun. moon and all the planets lie within, and their journey across the sky from east to west each day..

(so if a kid watches where the sun rises and sets, then watches how the moon riseds and sets in the same place, then how the brightest stars that move along the same path (especially Jupiter but also Saturn and Mars) are actually planets not stars... and how they move in the sky relatively to everything else which is fixed..)
