I am totally new to Astro but I've quickly learnt that if there's one photographic discipline that needs loads of Digital Imaging, in fact loads of everything, this is it, from the initial image capture to the final result.
This image, of the Andromeda galaxy (M31), was taken with my Sony RX10Miv mounted on a Sky-Watcher Star Adventurer tracking mount. I took 30 X 30second exposures at ISO1600 at f4 then 20 Dark images and 20 Biases images. All of this was then processed using SiriL stacking software and a few final tweaks in Photos on my MBP.

This is one of the initial 30 images

and this is the result

Wow - the difference is amazing and shows how important correct technique is, especially in something as technical as astro. That's a glorious final image.

Do you know what the other small (perhaps I should say 'further away'!) galaxy is above Andromeda?

Yes, Andromeda is labelled M31, the central galaxy, the small bright spot at 4 o'clock is M32 and the one over the top is M110. Don't think they have a name...........

I suspect the older 'stars' were named by the ancients but the more recent discoveries - all the M numbers - were too numerous to name and easier for scientists to catalogue.

And in millions of years time when we (Milky Way) collide with Andromeda I suppose it will be Andromeda's milky way! Smile
