Best cheap superzoom compact

I'm off on a city break in a couple of weeks and thought it might be easier to carry a compact camera around rather than my DSLR gear.

Is there anything decent under say 250 ?? Amazon have the Canon Powershot SX710 for 235 but I don't know how it compares with equivalently priced cameras from other manufacturers.

Thanks Smile

Recently bought a 2nd hand Nikon V1 and kit lens for 130 (Ffordes), and 30-110 zoom for 85. Pretty compact and good IQ for not a lot.

I have a Mk1 Sony RX100 which is excellent and very pocketable I paid 220 for it, slightly used. It is not a superzoom though.
I took it on holiday with me last year and didn't miss my DSLR at all.

This looks like a fine little camera Bri, has it all. The link is for Am-azon Canada, so the price in your funds should be close to your budget, and you don't need the other stuff that comes with it.

The Panny TZ series usually comes top of most lists for travel compacts.

I have the Canon SX710 and find the picture quality a little disappointing, lacking in detail. It's got plenty of features though. I got it at a very good price otherwise i would have probably gone for something else. Case of form over function i think. 20mp in such a small sensor with such a long zoom is always going to stretch the technology. The SX700 with less Mega pixels is supposed to give better image quality.

I also have a cheap Panasonic Lumix 10mp compact which produces excellent quality for its price and size. I would go with the Panasonic if i where you.

I got my SX710 from Currys. You could have a look there. Sometimes they have deals on.

I've got a Panasonic TZ71 Brilliant little camera. Jpeg & RAW AND most importantly for me, it has an incorporated viewfinder. Often takes better pictures than my DSLR The latest iteration is the TZ80 as indicated by StrayCat above.

Thanks everyone. TZ80 looks like it's a bit expensive. I do have an old Canon G12 which only has 28-140mm zoom, but I was looking for something a bit more compact. However, all the ones I've looked at, including the "Top 10 Best Budget / Cheap Compact Cameras 2016" linked to above seem to have flaws.

I think I might just take my 6D after all, forget the long zooms and just walk closer Wink and take a 17-40 lens. I was concerned I wouldn't be allowed to carry the camera in my cabin bag since the new restrictions came in, but I believe now it's just laptops, tablets and phones (flying from Istanbul).

The TZ70 is about 270 and because it has 12Mp rather then 18Mp on its sensor is said to have better low light performance than the TZ80.

I did own a TZ70 and it was pretty good. I don't have a compact at all now. My Panny GM1S is my (MFT) compact-substitute.

Bri, you'll get just as good IQ cropping your "real" camera images to what you'd get with a long zoom compact, but then you knew that.Smile

Yeah, maybe a little - don't think I can crop from 40mm on my 6D to the equivalent of 400mm though. Smile

Just don't want to be lugging 3+ lenses around a city for 4 days.

I would heartily recommend the Panny TZ70 - the image quality is actually superior to the TZ80 even with a slightly smaller sensor. I printed A3 prints with no problem!

Now I've gone and spent ages comparing the TZ70 and the Sony HX90V and I just can't decide....

One has higher pixel count for better detail, the other is better in low light. One has a flip out screen, but doesn't shoot in RAW....

Then I throw in the Canon SX720, which has a 40x zoom....

And while I'm looking, the price of the TZ70 goes up by 30!

Life's way too complicated.

Bite the bullet and get the TZ70. Cracking little camera.
