I have decided to get a flash for my Canon EOS 1200D.

Does anyone have any advice on the best one to get?

Depends on how much you want to spend. In my film and darkroom days I used a Metz Mecablitz for studio shots and was never disappointed with its performance.

Have a look on the Metz website. There will probably be a flash to suit your camera.

I use a handful of Yongnuo YN-560 mkIII's. While they are fully manual, and you don't get ETTL like with the Canon flashes, I find them really good value for money.

I got 3 flashes, stands, umbrella's, brackets etc all for the price of one brand new Canon 430-EX! I'm sure these Yongnuo's won't last as long as the Canon version, but I only use them a few times a year.
