What is your price range?
If you want pictures of dogs and kids moving around, the lens I would suggest would be a tele zoom but that would not give a decent wide end for close work or landscapes so you need to think about which you prefer. You can get the superzooms such as the new Tamron 18-270 (which is getting good reviews) but then you compromise on quality at each end - admittedly you can correct much of this in Photoshop but how much post processing do you do?

The EF-S 15-85 handles very well with the 50D. It's very sharp, has excellent image stabilization, and auto-focus is fast and accurate, at least on my copy. The zoom range seems to me ideal for a walk-about lens. I've had mine for about 18 months, and it has proved to be very reliable - if a shot doesn't come out well, it's my fault!

price range would be around 450
i have a canon18-200 and most of the time if the light is good i takes nice images but i was looking for something a bit faster.
what about the tamron 17-50 or sigma 17-70

I've had two copies of the Tamron, and neither was sharp at F2.8. Autofocus was less reliable than the Canon 15-85, and the Canon is sharper all round. The Canon is a better lens in my opinion, but then it's twice the price of the Tamron.

Took delivery at the week end of the canon 15-85 and so far very pleased
Nice and wide for landscapes and very easy to use around the grand kids eg fast and quiet focusing
Also nice and sharp.
With this lens and the 70-300 L I shouldn't need another lens Wink

Glad you like it, and lucky you! I've been lusting after the 70 - 300 L for months, but can't afford it at the moment. One day.....
