Best Sling-strap for DSLR?

Hi all,

I'm interested in getting a sling strap for my D800 as I find the strap uncomfortable.

Does anyone here use such a thing, and what's the best brand to go for, they all seem to promise the same things but seem to vary quite a bit in cost.

Any thoughts/feedback appreciated.

I only use black rapid, I carry a D4s with Nano 80-400 Nikkor and a D810 with f2.8 Nikkor 70-200 and am happy all day

For one camera I use the sport strap

I have three of these, two on the double one on the sport ideal for accessories, phone, cards

I also recommend BR.
One thing I like is the detachable strap that goes under the armpit, ensuring that the padded shoulder piece stays on your shoulder all the time.

100%

I tried the double strap I have that doesn't have this and it moves about too much

Another vote from me for the Black Rapid system: it seems strong and robust to carry a heavy load around.

these are by far a better system been using op/tech for years they really do make your camera and lens feel lighter.

Actually I use Optech neck straps but find that the others like the ones you quote are not in my opinion (I assume you mean better in "your" opinion" than Black Rapid)

Have used the Optech system strap but didn't get on well with it - found it would move around in use. I now use the BR Sport which is great for me.
Also have the http://www.blackrapid.com/products/fastenr-t1 with the plate attached, to save the switching when using the tripod.

Recently have also used the BR SHOT http://www.blackrapid.com/products/shot when I don't want the cross body strap. Again I've found it very comfortable with no slip, though not as good as the Sport for extended use.

the thing with the black rapid is it's only on the bottom of the camera so it hangs upside down. if you use the op/tech on a camera with the battery grip it fits in two places so the camera hangs better.

Never found that to be a problem. I just make sure the camera hangs at a comfortable height on my hip with the lens facing backwards. Then it's a natural hand/arm movement to get the camera up to my eye without having to fumble.

Have grips on mine, and found the Optech strap would get in the way when reaching for the camera, but agree with Saltireblue for ease of use.

Black Rapid for sling and Optech for neck strap. I've found they're the best for me and have been using them both for years.

I have a Black Rapid sling strap, forget the specific model but it has pockets for spare memory cards, small mobile phone, etc. No complaints. (Although it was expensive)

I bought a Sun Sniper strap from the Photography Show a couple of years ago

http://www.sun-sniper.com/en/

It cost about 45 but I've not used it yet as I'm nervous that my camera will not be secure hanging from it. The strap screws into the tripod socket on the bottom of my camera, and I'm worried that the camera might work itself loose and fall off.

Has anyone used this type of strap? Are they safe to use?

I'm going to Rome next week and was thinking of giving the strap a whirl to make it easier to carry around.

I've used these (bottom to top - Custom SLR, BlackRapid, Op/Tech, Sunsniper,) with a Canon 1Dx + 70-200 f2.8 L zoom so a fair amount of weight. My personal opinion briefly on each:

Optech: straps are quite thin and shoulder pad looks cheap although pretty comfy. Didn't feel my camera was safe.
Sunsiper: well made but I found the shoulder strap uncomfortable/inflexible and quite chunky. Glide of camera on strap wan't that smooth.
Custom SLR: really comfy shoulder pad. glide smooth although uses a plastic clip. Found though that my camera bounced a lot when walking which i did't like.
Black Rapid: my favourite. Comfy, not too much bounce, smooth glide. I had a really right stuff clamp attached which then clamped to the cameras L plate. Had an optech clip as back up. See below:
