Hi,

I have a Nikon D7100 and use with it a Nikon cable release. I have now, once again, caught the lead in the tripod and broken the plug that goes into the camera. Is there any way to just repair/replace that plug? It get costly having to buy a whole new shutter release just for the small plug on the end.

I have not used a shutter release cable since a film camera. My early Digital cameras could be operated by an infrared remote. The last two by WiFi. My current Canon 5D4 can be controlled by WiFi using a Canon app on my iPhone or I Pad. I understand that the Nikon D7100 also has WiFi so may be this will be an easy route and save a repair.

I use a Nikon ML-L3 remote release with my Nikon 7100. I think it works with infra red and they are a reasonable price on Amazon Hope this helps

Thanks spickles, I'd actually being looking at that one tonight. Do you always have to stand in front of the camera to use it?

I've got a knock off wireless release that came via ebay and only cost a couple of pounds.
I don't use a tripod but sometimes place my camera on a wall or something so it hasn't had a great deal of use but it has yet to let me down.
Also, if you're a cheapskate like me, you can get replacement batteries in the £ shop.

Edit; it will work from wherever you're standing; at least, mine does although I guess its range must be quite limited.

Thanks Sitan1. Got one of those. Just wanted to know if the plug on the cable release can be replaced. So far, it seems not.

I believe the D7100 has a IR sensor on the back as well as the front for the ML L3. Haven't used it for years I prefer wired or using qdslr dashboard and the usb link for those difficult to access places. If you want to go wireless you need a WU-1a Wireless Mobile Adapter which plugs in but is easily lost. Amazon has a variety of remote releases some at reasonable prices.

Thanks steveh5, it would be good if it does have IR front and back. I'll have to check that out.

nikonphotographer, much appreciated for those images. That's it then, I'll get one of those PL-L3 remotes. Thanks everyone for all of the feedback, advice and suggestions.

Trying to actually answer the question: no you won't be able to buy a new plug from Nikon. You can buy cheap non-Nikon knock-off shutter releases.
If you are handy with a soldering iron you could in theory buy a cheap one, cut the plug off and solder it to your Nikon one but it would seem kind of pointless.

I'm a Canon user and have bought cheap Canon ones, chopped off the button end and soldered it to both 2.5mm and 3.5mm jacks to use in Arduino projects that shoot the camera for me, and for my star tracker, which does the same.

Thanks Big Bri. As I’m about as practical as a chocolate teapot, I don’t think I’ll risk working with a soldering iron. Grin
