Camera connect app
I have used the Canon Connect App on my iPad and it work fine.

With Wi Fi. The only issue I had was the iPad and Camera were initially set to shut down after a short time so I removed both these limits and all was well. I was waiting for birds to land on a branch and just sat in a chair with my iPad on the other side of the garden and my camera set up on a tripod not far from the branch.

I use Canon Camera Connect on both my Samsung Tab & on my Samsung S6 mobile (yes I know it's a dinosaur 
) with my 5D Mk4.
It works perfectly, using WiFi.
But you say in your original post that you are using a Sony camera. Perhaps that's where your problem lies. as I'm sure the app will be optimised for Canon cameras.

I gave up on Sony Imaging Edge. I have two Sony mirrorless bodies and the app does not work well with either of them.
Instead I use a Vanja card reader which is small and very light.
