The film itself was removed from the cartridge for developing and then put back for storage. The film is 24mm wide so you'd need to modify a film spiral to accommodate it if you wanted to home-process.
Re the Amazon stock. I have found it impossible to find out the expiry date on these films from them. I am sure that the manufacture by Kodak and Fujifilm ended in 2011 so the films will all be out of date, but if kept in ideal conditions should produce reasonable results.
