I know I've asked the question before about 17-40 L lens.but I've since been told the 15-85 is a sharper lens.do any of you guys have these 2 lenses on a cropped body.if so do you have any image samples I could view.I've just been in jessops and tried the 17-40.it's really sharp just one thing putting me off is the short zoom at 40mm.??????????

I have the 15-85 on a 7D, it's a brilliant lens, down side no weather sealing and will only fit cropped copy.

At f8 and smaller, it is very difficult to tell the difference between something like the 17-40 and the 15-85. So for landscapes, where you are likely to be using f8 to f16 I am pretty sure you will be OK with either. The 17-40 is weather sealed (when a filter is attached) so if you go out into bad weather this may be the better bet.
Also, the 15-85 goes from f3.5 at 15mm to 5.6 at 85mm - if i recall correctly at 40mm it is f4.5 which is virtually the same as the 17-40 so there is no real-world compromise there. Plus the 15-85 has a very good IS.

I started with the 17-40 but very quickly bought the 17-55 f2.8 because 40mm was too short for 'general' photography. If I was buying now, the 15-85 would be my main choice and would have to decide how much I wanted the constant f2.8 (in retrospect, not enough)

This site prefers the 17-40 but as far as I can tell, any changes he mentions can be corrected in post processing.

If you can, I would advise taking your camera to a shop where you can try both and look at them on your computer at home before deciding.

Can't speak too highly of the 15-85. Definitely my weapon of choice and the zoom range would be sorely missed if/when I go to full frame. Majority of my p/f is with this lens.

Yup, I like my 15-85 very much. It's even heavier and has a shorter zoom than my Tamron 18-270, but I still prefer it.

I have the 15-85 and find it great. Martins have it at 519.04 in their sale + free Hoya filter. There is also 55 Canon cashback making it 464.04, I reckon that is a steal.

I recently bought a 7D 15-85 kit and have to say the lens gives fantastic results on the 7D and my 450D. Plus the fact you can get 55 Canon cashback at the moment, which has already been mentioned,
