I have a Canon 1D MkII and am interested in a new flshgun. What would people advise out of the two above?
Any sources to buy considered good value?

Any views welcome!!

I've got both of them and the 550EX rarely comes out of the bag anymore. That isn't to say the 550 isnt an excellent gun. The 580Ex just has that bit more of everything

Agree with the above.

The 580 has the advantage that it shares more information with the 1dMkII, including white balance settings and it automatically detects the sensor size. It also uses E-TTL II rather than E-TTL which means (with lenses that record distance information) that it is much more accurate.

I have several 550EX and 580EX and infinitely prefer the 580 with my 1D MkIINs

It is much nicer to use, it recharges quicker.

the 580ex is ready to shoot far quicker than the 550. Theres no painful whine to remind you that your still waiting for that first shot!

I only use my 550 as a slave these days.

oh, and the new control wheel on the back of the 580 is a bit of design genius!

The 550EX functions with ETTL II because the ETTL II part is in the camera and not the Flashgun but you have to have lenses that record distance information, but it does not have the WB function.

Another feature of the 580EX is expanded AF point coverage. The 550EX will only support the five horizontal AF points of a 20D/350XT/5D. The 580EX will support all 9/7/9+6 AF points of these cameras.

You will find that skin tones are much more natural on the 580. It's also slightly shorter so it doesnt sit to high in certain bags or cases that it gets damaged and it also misses less frames when used with or with out a quantum than the 550.
