Hi i have a Canon 500d and thinking on upgrading to the 5d mk 2. Would this be a good choice and step up.

Hi you dont say what lenses you have if they are EF-S lenses they will not go on the 5d mk2 body.

Also, depends on what you like to shoot!

A decent camera but as pink says.
I take it you do mean the mk2 and not mk3 so it'll be second hand. Nothing wrong with that. What sort of price are we talking about? Have you considered the 6D? If you decide against full frame how about the 7D2?

How can one say without knowing what you shoot

I have used a 5D Mkii for at least 5 years. An excellent camera that suits me. It is ideal for landscapes, portraits, architecture and low light. I take images mainly for competition potential so the best will often be printed A3 size. The high resolution and low noise of the 5D2 is ideal for this. Its one weakness is fast focussing where it is much inferior to the Mkiii. However, this has not been a problem for me and I can successfully photography birds in flight but you need a fast lens.

I've got all 3 of the 5D series - they're all ace, though I only really use the mark 3 as it's got a few more bells and whistles.

Thanks for all the replys so far. I mainly shoot landscapes and would have a budget of around 1000 and am open to second hand market as well to get me up the ladder but within budget really.

maybe get a 5D2 and 17-40 for a grand if you dig around the second hand market

Just how much difference is there between the mark I and mark II? Mark II brought video with it etc. For a landscape photographer would a Mark I (at 275) be a decent investment? Allowing for best possible glass?
