I have been a canon fan for 50 years. I have now bought a 650D. I know I can attach my FD lenses with an adapter, but I would really like to know if I can use my 199A Speedlight and also have control over modern speedlights! Thanks for your help.

the reason I ask this is that canon's site is unhelpful if your equipment is older than three years!!

Older speedlite's are not compatible with your 650D and I've heard somewhere they may actually damage your camera due to voltage differences. You can however trigger an ex series flash that has a slave mode using the built in flash.

You could also pick up an inexpensive trigger and use it off camera or on a bracket

I use my old Canon 580EZ (not EX) Speedlight on my 550D with both set to manual. Works fine. (I prefer to use to use it off-camera with my Hahnel triggers though.)
