Canon EOS 1DX Mk III - HEIF files

I see that Canon are offering HEIF (High Efficiency Image Format) files as well as RAW and Jpegs on the new EOS 1DX Mk III.
They are claiming that HEIF files offer 10 bit images and much smaller file sizes compared to Jpeg and a greater tonal range.
I'm curious as to how this will work in practice though.
Do the pro's actually need another image format to slot in between RAW and Jpeg?
And will any other manufacturers follow Canon's example?
Interesting times.

My thoughts were the same as yours Fma7. Apparently Apple use HEIF files in their iphones and Windows 10 devices can open the files with an app.
Apple, Windows & HEIF files
Whether it will actually "kill jpeg's" as some are saying raises huge questions for me.
