Canon L 70-200mm f2.8 IS (Mk I)

Hi all
I've been saving up my pennies all year, and have just about enough saved to purchase a used f 2.8 70-200mm lens.
I've been doing tons of reading up, but wanted to get all your sage advise. I've had my mind set on the Canon L 70-200mm IS (Mk I). Is this still a good choice given the new Sigma and Tamron offerings? Also been looking at the Sigma Sport 70-200 as well.
I shoot using a 7D (only lens i have right now is the EF-S 17-55mm f2.8), and tend to shoot a bit of everything. I defo want a 2.8 for portraits etc.
Any advise welcome!
Cheers

I have had a 70-200mm f2.8 L IS Mk1 for many years now. It is an excellent lens. I also have the 1.4x extender also Canon which is matched to this lens so no deterioration in quality and auto focus etc works fully. I have found this lens particularly good for sport, birds and other wildlife as well as a few portraits.
