Charades for the Oldies....a Polish man called Hyme (?)

Many many years ago, hence charades for the oldies, my father read a book about a Polish man called Hyme (?) and his struggles to learn English.
Apparently, it's all about different meanings of words ("aye" and "eye" for example). He thinks the author's name began with "W". Unfortunately, this is all he can remember and he would like to find a copy of the book. I know it's not much to go on, but I'll bet someone out there knows what he's on about.
We've tried to goggle Hyme, and all it comes back with is the obvious did you mean "hymen" etc
I know I've not given you much to go on, but I'm hoping that some of the older and more experienced members will remember the book(s)/author and if possible be able to give a link to one or two.
