Clunking Lens

I have a Sigma DC 17-70mm f2.8-4 macro HSM lens (about six or seven years old) which I use with a Nikon 7100 body mainly for landscapes. The lens has started to make a clunking noise when the camera is switched on and the zoom is twisted at about 23mm. The image viewed through both the viewfinder and LV jumps at that point. This does not happen if the camera is switched off but happens if autofocus is on or off and if OS is on or off. The pictures taken since this started to happen seem OK but I am worried that the lens will let me down. I have tried it on a different Nikon body with the same results
I cannot find anything about this on Google and am thinking of contacting H. Lehmann of Stoke-on-Trent to see if it is worth repairing but any comments or ideas before I do this would be welcome
