I find I cannot screw a 77mm Cokin Polarizing filter holder onto this lens because the lens hood wont go back far enough to allow the filter holder to get onto the lens's thread?
Any ideas folks?

I don't have the 300mm lens but the lens hood looks the same as the 40-150mm, twist and slide forward and back. Remove the lens hood then screw in the filter, replace the hood.

The lens hood doesn't come off. The answer seems to be to get a 77mm to 77mm Cokin ring to increase the depth of the thread.

Just found the manual for that lens online. What a strange design, not being able to remove the lens hood. Hope you can find a reasonable solution.

Well in essence the lens is sort of 'removed' by sliding it back out of the way which is fine but if it slid back about 2mm more all would be well.
This new Olympus micro four thirds system is utterly brilliant so I am not complaining, it is easily fixed. Almost all of the world's top wildlife photographers have dumped the old Canon/Nikon heavy stuff to do the same thing for half the weight. No I haven't weighed it but I did sell my old gear and now I can walk upright!
