Crop tool and smart object in PS.

Hi Guys,
I recently installed Photoshop on a new machine; everything's up to date etc.
However, when I crop an image, the cropped image that's left immediately becomes a smart object which I don't want.
It's a real nuisance as all I want to do is to simply implement the crop and move on.
This happened to me once before and someone, somewhere, was kind enough to tell me how to turn it off but I can't remember how to go about it.
I'm sure that it was a simple fix and I'm just missing something.
Any ideas please . . . ?

Interesting but I am puzzled by this. I have "Always place as Smart Object " ticked but cropping does not create a smart object. I can create a smart object by opening a Raw file from LR as a smart object which I do only when working on Infrared. You can change a layer to a smart object by Layer>convert to smart Object. When in crop mode, I do not have "delete cropped pixels ticked" so you can still change your mind about the crop later which is similar to what you would get with a smart object but the layer is not a smart object. My cropping will normally be done in LR anyway.
