Hey, I have a Nikon D5100 and I'm looking for a lens with more range for airshows and wildlife on my travels, I thought this lens would cover me for what I need but I thought I'd check with the people in the know before shelling out the monies.

Well... I don't know about the Nikon 70-300... but my Canon 70-300mm lens is a wonderful lens for airshows.

My facebook album:

has 3 airplane photos from an airshow here made with my Canon lens. They HAVE been cropped some, but only like 70% of the original size. I've been very pleased with the lens, so I can't imagine that the Nikon would not be a great lens for your purposes, being on a 1.5 crop sensor. The pics in the album were also on a crop sensor.

Hope this helps. Smile

Go for it. I think the Nikon 70-300 is on par with the Canon (which I have) and I was very pleased with mine.

The Nikon 70-300mm ED VR etc etc, Will be great on your D5100, I have used this lens for airshows mounted on D200 & D700, Can't fault it.

The VR ( OS/IS ) is pretty good to, But if your shooting over 1/500s its not required and can slow the AF slightly, But for slower shutter still hand held shots at 300mm its brilliant...!

Here is a favourite shot of mine , Not a fast moving aircraft ( they are easy peasy ) But a fast moving dawg, It was shot with the 70-300mm your talking about.....Grin

Here is an old airplane shot from ages ago....

Not fantastic I know, But I had just bought the lens a few days earlier, Still getting familiar at this stage.....!!!
