Christmas Prize Draw 2017

D850

I managed to acquire one at 11am on 8th September Grin
Initial feedback is it is a great camera, similar in size and feel to the D800/810.
Focus stacking works much better than some web suggestions, taking 30 shots to cover 4mm of focus travel (at an angle of 30 degrees above the test subject) with the 105 VR at 1:1 focus.
A detail to be aware of is when stacking with silent shutter mode is each file in the sequence gets a separate file number. This is needed for layer stacking when post processing. I am not sure yet how this affects the shutter count. I expect to use this function a lot.
Noise for jpeg is around at least a stop better at 20,000 ISO
The first image below is the test set-up.
Image 2 is a D810 heavy crop at 20,000 ISO
Image 3 is with the D850.

It looks as though decent 12x10 prints are possible at 20,000 ISO Grin
AF works in light so low that I cannot see by. You may have to guess where you aimed focus!
I have yet to thoroughly test the new AF but as a D500 owner I have a very good idea of how much better it will be than the previous 51 point AF
Live view works in light just after dawn when the first hints of green start to show in grass in fields.
As my wife has just had a 51st wedding anniversary and I was expected to be there I have not thoroughly tested the D50 yet.
She has a new Nikon slogan "I am expensive".
The D800/D810 launched at about 2,900 and the UK has fallen in value since then. For me it is definitely worth the asking price.
There is no Lightroom/PhotoShop NEF editing ability yet.
There is a new version of NX-D for limited NEF editing on the Nikon web site.

Camera Raw 9.12.1 was released for the subscription version with support lat week and coming to Lightroom soon, apparently.

I am sure all the other RAW conversion software companies will have support for it soon as well.

Are you using Helicon Focus as the stacking software ?

How did you do your focus staking previously ,and how does the stack done by the camera compere ?

A limitation of "manual" focus stacking is the time it takes to make each focus adjustment and "guessing" the amount of focus ring turn.
The new Nikon system has the advantage of precise repeatability in similar shooting conditions and no repeated adjustment of the focus ring with increased risk of an insect taking flight.
Focus adjustments of as little as a quarter of a millimetre are possible near 1:1 with the 105 VR - very difficult to estimate with manual focus.
Downsides include the learning curve of what 1 to10 setting does what at longer focal lengths and focus distances. Nikon might later provide some starting point guidance. Another issue is the long time it takes software to process a stack of 30 stacked layers. With 100 RAW Nefs it could take several hours.

Many thanks Len for your initial impressions; I don't normally succumb to shiny box syndrome but the new D850 is gnawing at me.

Be aware Nikon withdrew the second year free warranty option on bodies at the end of last year so you only get a 1 year warranty from Nikon Sad
I has a second year circuit board replacement for the D810 which Nikon would not pay for on current body sales.

Has Lightroom been updated? I thought it was just Photoshop and LR was still waiting for the update.

Thanks Len, interesting because mine doesn't and it says there isn't an update available. Wonder what I am doing wrong. I downloaded 9.12.1 but that seemed to only update Photoshop. Is there a newer version now?

Nothing

That is what Adobe are stating officially on Lightroom Journal, so where Len has found an update for LR is a mystery or perhaps he is a Beta tester for LR 7 Wink

Ok thanks JJGEE I thought I was missing something. Was expecting LR to shout at me there was an update when there was one.
