I never delete in Camera -- the risk is that one day you will hit the DELETE ALL button !

You might want to look at getting a faster card reader/card. There is no way I could delete images as fast as they download on my machine.

We have a strict company policy that NO image however bad may be deleted away from base.

As Collywobbles correctly points out, it's all too easy to delete the wrong image, or even all of them when working underr pressure. Cards are now so cheap that it costs little to take the images back to base.

When we did weddings, some of the duffers provided elements that we could past into the selected shot.

This is clearly not a technical issue. It may sense generally, as some have said, to normally leave it to later when you can properly review images to make a decision and in most circumstances there is no advantage in deleting earlier. However, occassionally I am right at the end of the cards capacity and just a handful of shots to take. Perhaps I have no spare card or the photo opportunity may have gone by the time I have located another card and swapped. In these circumstances I may delete a few just to create the extra space I need.

Yes, delete if you are stuck for space. But I think a lot of reviewing and deleting uses up battery, and space is irrelevant if you don't have power. Though spare batteries can solve that.

The camera never lies! Reminds me of shots from the Stalinist era, where important people present at meetings suddenly vanished from official photos.

There was a typo in that quote. It was supposed to read "paste into the selected shot".

Delete in camera or PC its all a matter of choice personally in the field and if i have time I check the image against the histogram if adjustments give me a better histogram or by recomposeing a better picture then I delete the first shot.
But ALLWAYS format the card in camera this is also a good time to check all your settings before a days shoot its to easy to forget the last set up and end up with wonky shots.

Am I right in thinking that deleting in camera doesn't in fact delete the file information associated with the image but just the image itself, and would therefore lead to a clogging up over time? The only way to completely delete would be to reformat the card which, I was told, was a much better way for the memory card lifespan.

I delete obvious crap in the field, download the card via a reader to the PC at home, delete from the PC all the shots I don't want then re format the card in camera ready for it's next outing.

Me too!

My PC has built in card readers, and they're very fast, even downloading 1080P movies is fast.
