DG 28-300 showing signs of wear

I've had this DG 28-300 on a Nikon D70 for a couple or three years. The lens is getting very loose - not in the rings, but in the main body of the lens which waggles up and down (and in/out) by a couple of mm. As a result the focus is sometimes way off.

As a general purpose lens it has served well and I'd like to get the slop out of it for more years of use.
I'm happy to try taking the thing apart, but would like a. an instruction booklet/diagram or b. some advice on how to go about this. My friendly dealer wants to charge $200 to send it to Sigma for re-furbishing and I don't think it's worth that. It is worth an hour of my time though!

It feels as though one of more screws have come loose inside and just need tightening up.

Any ideas?

Are there any independant repair houses in your area? Often very much cheaper than dealers/manufacturers & just as good. I wouldn't advise trying it yourself unless you are a skilled micro engineer.

try Lehmanns or Fixation, both have good reputations as repairers.
