Just crop the photo afterwards. You'll get the same result.
Some cameras do interpolation of digital zooms in firmware, so that the images appear clearer. Both my Sony SLT-a58 and Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZX1 do this up to about 2X digital zoom. Beyond that it is just cropping. If you look in my portfolio you will see one of these from the Lumix. It is the one of the moored fishing boat on the river. It is usually mentioned in the "complete" owner's manual. With my cameras there are both "Basic" and "Advanced" manuals.
