Dilemma - next camera

I currently have a D40x and a D70 but I think I want to trade up to a D80 or even a D200.
I also have a wife who does not want me to spend any more money on camera equipment. I have only been using a DSLR for about 9 months and I think maybe I should wait a while and learn more with what I've got before trading up. Thoughts anyone?

Lol Hanners.

i would defo go for D80 from personal experience...not experienced the D200.
Go into a camera store and ask for a demonstration and handle them to get a feely.

So you've got two cameras and a wife. Stick one on ebay and see if you get enough for a new camera Wink

Seriously. The D70 will handle similar to the D80 and the D40x will have similar image quality to the D80 and the D200. IOW, there really is no need to get the D80...and the D200 will only give you a different experience with slightly better weather sealing. If it was me I'd stick with what I've got and save for the D300.

Sounds like a more sensible option than the first...

If you want to spend the money (against your wife's wishes), it's up to you, and the D80 & D200 are undoubtedly better specified than the D40x & D70. But unless you can provide a compelling argument for needing the upgrade, I would suggest your post indicates a case of "new camera = better pictures" syndrome.

One more observation. It looks like you use just two lenses, the 18-55 VR and 55-200 VR. You'll get a lot more use out of a new lens instead of a new body. Staying at the budget end of the market, Sigma 10-20 if you want to play with landscapes, Sigma 105 Marco for bugs and fine detail, Nikon 18-70 for noticeably better image quality compared to the kit lens, Sigma 18-50 f/2.8 for a very sharp and fast lens, Nikon 70-300 VR for a noticeably sharper lens than the 55-200. These are just some of the lenses I've either got or have considered getting. There's obviously loads to choose from but my point is you have a camera (the D40x) that can produce images to match the D80 or D200 if you had the right glass attached.

Munkyboy could well be right, i think the best option to avoid not needing a camera due to sudden death, is to practice with what i've got and save up for a D300 when i know how to use it.
I was actually going to sell the 2 cameras to fund the new one so I may have survived a while longer anyway.

Thanks everyone for the advice better get back to work now, if i get the sack i wont be able to afford any cameras Smile

Thanks Flyingseale and you're right a good lens is a good investment.
I have also got the Tamron 200- 500mm which is good in a good light but hopelessd on a grey day.

I have the D70s and it's a great camera for what it is. Sure, it doesn't have weather sealing and it's fairly old compared to the new batch of dSLRs. But it's still a very capable camera, and it has useful features like 1/500 flash synch [the D80 is slower], and you can use the built-in flash to command Nikon Speedlights.

Stick with what you've got. If you really must sell one camera to reap some cash, I'd nominate the D40X to be honest. Get a 50mm f/1.8, only about 60-70 on eBay brand new.
