Do You Use Filters for Protection on Lenses?

After a bit of thought, and reading through for a second time all of your comments here, I have decided that at close macro distances I would like to have the piece of mind of some kind of protection for the front element. I've had a couple macro lenses where the front element was so far recessed into the front of the lens that it didn't need further protection, but not this one. Having studied on it a bit for a few days, I ordered this collapsible shade last night. I'll have it in the bag if I feel I need it. Otherwise, I don't mind the large one that came with the camera, but feel it may be too large for some macro work. What do you think? My 10-18mm is also 67mm, so might see double use.
