Hi, I've been offered a couple of jobs one taking School Prom photos and another photographing buildings for a building firm.

The thing is I take commercial pictures for the company I work for which my boss pays me for in my wages so no tax problems, but if I take outside work to I have to start a business?

Many Thanks

You have to register as Self-Employed. There's another thread going on somewhere on this subject. Not got time now to find it for you but check out WelshKiwi.

First couple of jobs, I wouldn't worry about the IR too much. If it becomes a regular thing, then yes, you might want to register.

give the inland revenue a ring. You are basically required to report any income you have, if its above and beyond your salary, and not included in your payslips. So just keep accurate accounts, and fill in a tax return once a year. simple, sort of.

You might not find them in the phone book though. They've been HM Revenue & Customs since April 2005. Wink

Agree. However "inland revenue" in google brings up " www.hmrc.gov.uk /" as the first link.

I dont think you neccessarily have to register as self employed, but may give you info on a seperate tax code and forms to fill at the end of each year.
I think from what I can remember.

You have three months from when you start earning money to register as self employed. Any money not as part of employment will mean that you have register as self employed. Contact the Revenue if in doubt.
