ePHOTOzine Photographer of the Year - your thoughts please

We've been considering an ePHOTOzine POTY competition for almost four years now, so I thought it time we set the ball in motion for 2008.

I'd like your thoughts on existing POTY competitions run by the likes of Practical Photography, Amateur Photography and Garden POTY, (what works what doesn't) and also if you think the scoring system we have devised will work.

The idea is we will run 12 competitions throughout 2008 each with a different theme. We are considering awarding points for the following:
Place Points
1st 10
2nd 5
3rd 3
shortlist 2
entered 1

For example if you enter all 12 and get shortlisted once and 1st once you'll get 24 points (12+2+10)

If you only enter three and win them all you'd get 30 points (10+10+10)

Any maths guys out there? Logically would it be a fair system.

We will not be charging for entry and we expect to get a good prize each month with a great overall prize.

In the examples given the first gets 12 points for entering but the second gets no points for entering. Slip of the keyboard?

Sounds like a good idea & i'm sure you will get a lot of interest in the competition.
Gets the thumbs up from me

the difference between short list and 3rd place is very small...

10 - 6 - 4

may give a bit more weight to a 3rd place?

Cannot speak for the maths side because I am useless at maths but I like the idea overall.

Quite a drop from 1st to 2nd compared to all the others

Without limitations as to country of residence, etc.?

Should the two examples read:
12+2+10 and 3+10+10+10
or:
10+2+10 and 10+10+10 ??

Or should there be a Stewards enquiry followed by and International Court of Appeal? Wink

And who does the judging?? Wink

Sounds like a fantastic idea to run this comp, only one thought that the points system has with me,is that due to the probability of such large entrants in it,then the chances of submitting good winning entries throughout the year is going to be very difficult,to enable you to be placed.Surely there can be a fairer way of deciding.Maybe i'm totaly of here, but just wanted to add my view.

LOL.
I think its a great idea, should be 2 scores tho (could use this in the gallery too) 1 for the pic, based on comp, use of camera, overall image etc. and then a score for originality. That would work in the gallery rather well too.

Looking forward to seeing this one Pete.

10-6-4-2-1seems the logical choice or even 12-etc.

or

An even longer list. 10-9-8 etc for the top 9 with 1 for shortlisting.
It's often hard to choose between the top 3-4.

Photographic Consistency will be rewarded, rather than just winning a couple and nowhere in the rest.
Also it will encourage regular participation

Would you have to be a fully payed up member to enter or be an active member without paying the yearly fee...?or could you just use the site for the competitons without being a active member.....Babs

I like the idea of a competition but it MUST be open to all members - not, for example, UK residents only!.

But why such a complicated scoring/grading system? Why not just have 5, 4, 3, 2,1 points per month/competition? Or whatever simple sequence?

Please, don't over complicate things - I personally have quite enough problems keeping up with the elements of computer and photography advances!

Please do make the entry system simple (not like for example, the "before and modify" of the Photos section that I still can't work out, therefore have lost interest!). Simplicity above all else please.

Will it be one big comp or categorised? i.e Pro Photographers, Hobby Photographers, Young Photographers etc?

A really good idea; possibly more points for 2nd and 3rd places to create distance between those shots just scoring on 'entered''?
