Anyone up for a day of Dragon/Damselfly snapping?

Lots of people seem to be interested in photographing these flying jewels, so I thought this might make a good members day out. Anyone interested in a get together some time in July at Paxton Pits (just off the A1 on the Cambs, Beds border) please reply below.

This is a good site consisting of flooded gravel pits and having the river Ouse flowing by the reserve, so ideal habitat for many species.

I would be, but it's a helluva way to come when I have everything I want to shoot dragonfly wise right on my doorstep!.....LOL
I'll keep an eye on this thread though......

In principle, yes. A good place for dragonflies - last year they were all over there.

One thing to bear in mind about Dragonflies.

Many of the species seen in the UK have very long life cycles (up to 5 years as a nymph) so a good emergence one year in a particular location does not necessarily mean that there will be a good hatching the next

I agree with you Barrie, having said that, the Met Office are so far forecasting a swelter of a summer. Especially in June & July, which should be good news for dragonfly chasers in August!

Paxton have recorded 19 species ( see here ) so I think we would see good numbers of some of them. Plenty of other insects as well. Good for birds also, 21 singing Nightingales currently present.

I was thinking of a Saturday or Sunday. The one weekend I can't do is the 8th/9th (Ely Folk weekend), but any other date in July is fine by me. If those interested can let us have their can't do dates then hopefully a date that suits all may be possible.

As bad weather could make this a non event it might also be wise to have a back-up date in reserve as well

As I have no can't do dates, I'll just go for one.

Saturday 2nd July. Meet time TBA.

In the event of rubish weather will be put back to Sat 16th July.
