I've been roped in to give a talk to my camera club on HDR.
I've been using photomatix quite happily ,but now I'm going to give a talk on it, I thought I'd better find out a bit more about it.
Can anyone help with the following?
1)When you generate an hdr image, it generally looks really horrible until you go onto tone mapping it. What is this the use of this image without the tone mapping, Am I missing something?
2) In generating a hdr image, it gives you a choice
a) assume standard tone curve
b)attempt to calculate tone curve applied
c) no tone curve applied
I always tick assume standard tone curve, but what is a tone curve? In what situation would I tick one of the others?
3)when you get the tone mapped image, you can select details enhancer or tone compression. I use details enhancer, when would you use tone compression?
Any light you can shed would be appreciated.

The answer to question 1) I believe lies in the fact that your monitor is not capable of effectively showing the image at that point. If you had a whizz bang monitor multi million dollar monitor then it would look a lot better.

Just don't worry about it was the message I was given
