Fireworks and 4K

Fireworks are not my thing at all but a local glossy rag for which I, once in a blue moon, take photos of undemanding stuff (gardens, architecture etc) has suggested I cover our local firework display for them. They must be desperate! Tongue

I just wondered whether anyone has used 4K video to take fireworks and pulled 8Mp stills from it?

The quality needs to be good enough for printing obviously. Photos will be up to 8" longest side.

Any tips appreciated. I'll be using an APS-C mirrorless camera in case it's relevant.

I probably wouldn't do that. You could take some with the video just to see how it comes out and back it up with some stills. After all I don't suppose they will publish that many so you'll have plenty of options.
Oh, and use a slower shutter speed, fireworks look better with a bit of motion blur.
Good luck.

Thanks. I did read that article - written long before the days of 4K video.

I have seen articles on the web suggesting 4K was the way to go for fireworks - these days. I just wondered if anyone on EPZ had practical experience - positive or negative.

No tripod. Too much of a scrum for that.

No tripod, relying on ois or ibis for hand holding slower shutter speed to capture the fireworks?

Here is one link: https://www.reviewed.com/cameras/features/for-better-fireworks-photos-shoot-video

I was just wondering if anyone on EPZ had actually used 4K for firework photos. It seems not from responses so far.

Oh well, I might well be a pioneer! Tongue

Yeah the guy is talking out of his backside. At one point he's advocating shooting 4k at 60fps and says if you need a still just pull one from the video.

To see the flaw in the whole idea work out what is the longest that a frame can be exposed for?

Another link which mentions stills from
4K but there are no specifics:

Can you work out your maximum shutter duration?

It will depend on what fps I choose: 24, 25 or 30. It is the inverse for the maximum, pretty much whatever you want for the minimum. Or have I got that wrong? Tongue

There is a model that lets you choose half a second, I don't know how it works. But normally when you shoot video, instead of stills you can't have a longer shutter duration than the the time that frame is the active one. So if 1/25 sec is as slow as you can go then you are shooting fireworks at a speed that doesn't allow for coloured trails etc. You will be able to cherry pick frames later but I think that even if the video looks good, you'll be disappointed when you hit pause.

Notice this video, looks okay when playing but hit pause, not like a decent photo really?

Pulled from 4K video. Not too bad, maybe. This is just a 'quick and dirty' image. The downside of shooting video-for-stills is the tedium of having to go through several minutes of video to pick out the best bits.
