That's the conclusion he comes to, can't see any other answer...
The article does not say if LensRental bought the lens new or secondhand. If it was bought secondhand somebody could have taken the lens apart in a dirty environment and an egg or maggot could hve arrived that way.
I wondered if the fly was button or zip, personally I prefer a nice strong metal zip! .

It is a well known fact that in winter all flies go into a glass factory to be made into bluebottles!
This fly became lost and flew into the wrong glass factory.
