Of all the ideas that I have heard in the General Election promises the 'Free broadband' is the one that scares me the most. We all know that nothing is free, it just means someone else will pay. The thought of 'State' controlled internet fills me with dread, an Orwellian nightmare.

An election promise by the labour party is that every home will have free wi fi. They intend to privatise the BT wifi part. BT is the largest suppler of wi fi in the UK and there's several others and nothing has been mentioned about them. I'm with virgin media and they are the second largest supplier so I can't see how it's going to work. There again, it's easy to promise something and then change your mind if you win the election.

So what's going to happen to the likes of talk talk, plusnet and the others? Talk talk have already announced the freezing of their fibre broadband rollout on the back of this promise, and who can blame them only for Labour to come in and take it over.

I work in telecoms and can see potentially hundreds of larger and smaller businesses (employers of thousands and thousands of taxpaying employees) going out of business. Without the economies of scales the likes of talk talk, vodafone, sky, etc will all massively have to scale back there wider product offerings. suddenly lots of related products will be unviable and all the smaller companies working out from this will disappear.
its potentially a UK telecoms industry killer, with other countries all picking up the cloud internet services you can no longer get from UK providers. Does the current Labour leadership not see the bigger picture and how our place in a global economy works ?

Maybe with Russia, China and Iran all controlling internet access then Jeremy Corbyn also wants state control or peoples internet usage - very scary.

I read somewhere that Virgin, etc, will have to sign contracts with the then state-owned Openreach and that they will be privatised if they refuse to agree to the terms. No wonder TalkTalk are nervous!

So we all get free broadband who's going to pay for future investment and upgrades, us through higher taxes more than likely.

So Labour will make IT giants such as Amazon and Google to pay for this. How many years of court cases and appeals will that take before the legalities are in place. Before that happens, they cannot begin rolling out fiber connectivity.

Sorry, K, badly phrased from me...it wasn't a question back to you, just a general observation wondering how long the process would be drawn out in the case of litigation.

With no competition guess how good the quality/reliability will be.

But then will Amazon and Google and all the big businesses move out of the UK, then where will the money come from?

Just my thought

The very thought of union barons, having control of the internet and satellites is enough to put anyone off the idea...... they would insist on a guard on every line..

Probably best to wait and see if Labour win the general election.
