Google scam??

I received an email from "Google" (?), security update message. Contents to the effect that they considered me to be under 18 years of age, and therefore could I validate my age by either entering debit/credit card details; or, the second option I forget.
This email came 2 days ago, and as I could not remember my google password, I let it lie. Then this morning I had a closer look at the email, and due to the mention of card details being required, I decided it must be a scam. Deleted the email then.
Has anyone else received such or know about it ?

I had a similar email on one of my Google accounts that is used for camera club. I just ignored it.

Was it this one?

The link in the email actually looks genuine.

If you do a search re why does google need to verify my age, it does come up with info relating to it.

Thank you all, yes, BigBri, was similar to what I received. Must be wary, especially when they ask for card details, etc.

I got one of those but the email address, although similar to one of mine, wasn't exactly right.

I ignored and deleted it.

The email is genuine. See: https://support.google.com/accounts/thread/126546554/age-verification-email-legit-or-not?hl=en

... and ...

https://blog.youtube/news-and-events/using-technology-more-consistently-apply-age-restrictions/

I received this email myself and checked the headers and links. They all point to it being genuine.

You only need to do it if you want to watch age-restricted material, though.

I'm not so sure.

Your link takes us to a Google page on which a question is being asked regarding exactly what we're discussing here.

However, the link-strewn reply from the 'Diamond Product Expert,' whatever that might be, doesn't actually relate to any of the above; instead, telling us what YouTube is up to.

Perhaps this Google official support article might help you understand what's going on:

I dont think the issue is about whether google want you to verify your age, its whether the email referred to is real. More often than not these emails are fake - phishing, scammers etc. all use existing account procedures to lure you into giving away details. I would ignore the emails and just log into your account and look at your settings, if you are required to change something do it from there, not from an email (even if you think its real).

It's hardly rocket science to look at the links in the email. In this case, they take you to your Google account page.

Exactly - I got the email for an account I use for camera club purposes, but not for my main account which already has a credit card attached to it (for purchases through the app store).

However, scammers will often take a genuine email as a template for their phishing emails, so always check the link goes to something.google.com and not something.google.com.ru or similar

Seems to me this is google, opened a new youtube account just to test, even though age and things are set up in account, I still requires proof that I am old enough, credit card, and other options are available. something I`m not going to do.

Looks like things have changed but no idea when, my old account is donkeys years old Smile
