Graduated filters
This depends on the effect you are after and where you take an exposure reading from. I always find the best method is to take a reading without the filter and then slide it over just before you take the shot. This ensures that the darker graduated section of the filter really has an affect on the sky. Otherwise the meter would compensate for the filter reducing its darkening capability, which I assume is the reason why you bought the filter.
