Keith is right - they were removed. We always had our numbers on outer garments, not just tunic jacket.

A good many police officers paid lumps off their mortgages and bought cars and holidays with their overtime.

Me included, one of my constables got some jackets made with the logo "Scargill payed off my Mortgage"
The divisional commander was not impressed, he never did have a sense of humour.
